Shorts On Tap: showing women film-makers at the new Deptford Cinema on April 14th, 2015
2015 marked the year Lewisham finally stopped being the only London borough without a cinema, as the community-funded and built Deptford Cinema finally opened its doors, having taken over an old shop on Deptford Broadway. The cinema has got right down to business with a raft of special screenings and seasons planned, including the fantastic "Cinemania New Worlds" season, but the Smoke Screen's first visit to the new venue coincided with an intriguing and diverse programme of short films by female filmmakers playing as part of the Shorts on Tap season.

Shorts On Tap show us their True Colours on March 29th, 2015
Given the buzz they create now, it’s hard to believe that Shorts on Tap’s screenings taking place every month all around London started as tiny screenings in the spare rooms of cafes. Word of mouth was quick to spread the news; the low entry fees (usually around £3 –£5) helped, as did the quality of the work shown.

EVENT REVIEW: SHORTS ON TAP ‘AUTUMN LEAVES’, TUESDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2014 – MORE GREEN THAN BROWN
Larry Oliver on November 12th, 2014
Since when did ‘Shorts on Tap’, the East London based showcase of short film wonderment get so popular? Tuesday night – no football on the telly; that’s one explanation. Word of mouth and it’s free? That is another. As I sunk into the judges’ two-seater sofa for the third time (grazie, Filippo) young people started appearing at my feet. Surely, my co-judge, award-winning filmmaker and qualified sky-diver, Boris Thompson-Roylance, was not some sort of deity? No, there was no room anywhere else. It felt more like a sleepover than a movie screening. Pass the Horlics, Pia!
SHORTS ON TAP PRESENT: LOOKING FOR CHANGES @ CAFE 1001
Girls on Film on October 14, 2014
Fast becoming GOF’s (not to mention half of East London’s) favourite short film evening, this month’s Shorts on Tap night was dedicated to 7 LGBT-focused films, and donated all its proceedings to anti-abuse charity Galop and to the production of short Wonderkid, which profiles homophobia in the footballing community. We were lucky enough to see see talks by Rhys Chapman, writer of Wonderkid, and Mike Buonaiuto, director of Credence (which, from the trailer, looks to be a first-of-its-kind science fiction LGBT-focused feature film).

I'm With Geek on September 19, 2014
My first I’m With Geek team outing took me to a dark bar on a side street just off Brick Lane, where a few of the other film girls and I perched precariously on wooden tables to the side of a plethora of mis-matched furniture. We had come to watch a variety of shorts from Shorts on Tap, and the room was packed and excited to see what the evening’s various directors had in store for us.
A Short Mission: Shorts On Tap present Beyond Scotland
Cinema Chords on September 18, 2014
Whichever way the vote is swayed today, there is no denying that it will be steeped in history. For many years, our Scottish kin have whispered of breaking away to thrive without the rule of our government. Whichever way you look at it, the people will speak at that roaring statement of No or Yes will ricochet through the United Kingdom with like a deafening drum best. Last night, seven independent film makers, largely thanks to Creative Scotland, presented the ideals and politics surrounding this tentative day of voting in last night’s Shorts on Tap event.

Shorts on Tap: And the Winners Are...
EVENT REVIEW: SHORTS ON TAP: ‘NATURE OF THE BEAST’, 3 JULY 2014, CAFE 1001, BRICK LANE, LONDON
Larry Oliver on July 05, 2014
London’s premier short film showcase – sorry, Portobello Film Festival - ‘Shorts On Tap’ opened its doors on 3 July for a screening of seven short movies based around the theme of violence. ‘All you need for a movie is a girl and a gun,’ someone once said, to which I would add, ‘yes, and a story.
